🤍💙🧡 Real Talk: Does Stock Photography Still Pay?

"Business success isn't about luck, it's about strategy, consistency and resilience."

I came across a question that needed an answer

Hey Reader

I came across this question whilst researching blogs about stock photography ....

Can you still make money from stock photography?

It’s a valid question, especially now that AI images are everywhere, and stock libraries are bursting with billions of photos.

Here’s the short version:

Yes, you can still make money from stock.

You can make money from being a stock photographer, that's what I am, but you’ve got to approach it with intention. Not just uploading and hoping, but creating with a purpose, following trends, and telling real stories.

Now before we dive into this, I've recorded a version of this on my Substack, so if you'd prefer to listen than read, hit the button below 👇🏻

Let me give you a bit of context first:

🤍 The stock photography market was worth around $4.75 billion USD in 2024.

💍 That’s more than the wedding photography sector.

🧑‍💼 And way ahead of commercial photography in the US.

So it’s still a big player. And while the stock world has changed since I first submitted over 15 years ago, the demand for authentic, real-life imagery has never been stronger.

Just last week I uploaded new photos, and one of the suggested keywords included “real life.” That says it all.

If you’re considering stock or want to give it another go, here are a few things that still make all the difference:

  • Keep an eye on trends and what’s in demand
  • Think about how your photo tells a story
  • Use thoughtful, relevant keywords
  • Don’t aim for perfect, aim for real

Want a recent example?

I spotted a local canal that had completely dried up due to lack of rain. Rather than shoot from the usual viewpoint, I climbed down into the canal bed and photographed the cracked earth, empty mussel shells, and fading water lines.

One of those images sold within days.

It told a story, and that’s what stock buyers are looking for.

So, back to the original question, can you still make money from stock photography?

Yes.

But not by accident.

If you’re ready to take your photography beyond just shooting for clients, or you’ve got a folder full of images collecting digital dust, stock photography could be your next smart move.

"You build assets you control, so drive traffic to your list, your shop, and your own portfolio first." Have you started to build some stability? Hey Reader When I first started, I thought success meant being fully booked. Week after week, I juggled shoots, editing, emails, invoices, and social posts. I was working all the time, but my business still felt fragile. One slow month and everything wobbled. It hit me that I'd build a job, not a business. The turning point came when I began...

And if you’re anything like me, you probably hate the constant churn,...

"You earn more from stock when you shoot a series, so tell one story across images and upload them as a set" Benefits of creating a passive income for photographers. Hey Reader Recently, I've had a lot of life stuff pull me away from my business. Whilst it's frustrating, even though I've set things up to enable access remotely, I've still not been able to devote as much time to my business as I would like. But one thing I'm grateful for is taking the time to develop a passive income, whether...
