Check out the latest trend report

Hey Reader

I’ve just finished reading the Stills 2025 Photography in Design Trend Report, and it really got me thinking about how useful these reports are for us as photographers.

When you’re building a stock portfolio, or even just shaping your creative work, it’s easy to shoot in the dark, hoping your images will resonate. A trend report gives you insight into what designers, brands, and agencies are looking for right now. It’s like having a peek at the brief before it lands on someone’s desk.

What I loved about this year’s report is that I’ve already acted on several of the trends without realising it. Even better, those images are already selling in the libraries.

Here are a few highlights from the report:

- Candid photography – real, unfiltered moments that feel raw and relatable. Audiences are tired of the polished 2010s look, they want honesty.
- Abstract and textural imagery – designers use these to add depth and tangibility to layouts. It’s a reminder that even a simple texture can have commercial value.
- Dark imagery – muted tones and deep shadows that add drama and intrigue. This one is being pushed heavily in fashion and advertising.
- Serif fonts are back – I was delighted to see this! Fonts might not sound relevant to photographers, but they influence how our images get paired and used in design.

What stood out most for me is how much of the report focuses on real life. Maybe that’s a natural reaction to the flood of AI imagery, but it’s encouraging to see buyers leaning into photos that make people feel something.

So, why does this matter for you?

- It can guide your next shoots with purpose.
- It helps you spot gaps in your portfolio.
- It positions you ahead of trends rather than chasing them.

I see these reports as an opportunity. Not to copy, but to adapt. To take the insights and apply them in a way that fits your style.

Have you ever used a trend report to plan your photography? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time,

Nicky x
